New Orleans - Clayton Matthews

I bought this used book store/used record store in Allston, MA called “Diskovery” (113 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA 02134.) The woman who runs the place is an Asian woman in her 50s, I would guess. The first few times I went in there I found her a bit brusque. But after going there a few times and after talking with her for a while, she seems genuinely nice. The last time I was there, she told me that she’s having a hard time meeting the higher rent and that she’s worried that after 16 years her cat that lives in the store won’t survive the move if they have to leave. Sad. It really is an awesome place though. They have way too much stuff so it’s just piled on top of each other. Half of it is off limits because it’s not filed yet, and what is there – well, its pure serendipity if you find something. But you do find stuff. I would totally recommend checking the place out. It’s beautiful shine to way too much random stuff piled in too small an area - much like my apartment.

As far as this book goes, I bought it because I love cheesy paperback novels. I love great covers, and I’m a sucker for trashy ones. “New Orleans” by Clayton Matthews is a little edgier of a novel than the ones I tend to buy, but I love the cover. Bad wood walls, yellow satin, druggie looking blond. It’s a great 70’s cover. But when I opened up the book and read the first page, I had to get it. I’ve reprinted here, and used Photoshop to highlight the part that I found amazing. I think New Orleans may still have been underwater when I bought this.
